Internship ­ Summer 2016 Market Assistant

This internship is designed to teach the ins and outs of farmers market operations. A farmers market is a direct marketing small business venture and this internship provides a hands­on opportunity to understand the economics of agriculture in the urban market setting.

For Birdhouse Farmers Market, you will learn market management: from behind the scenes administration to making the market day happen! Along with selecting one or two ongoing responsibilities, on any given market day you will assist the Market Manager with market setup and breakdown; guiding volunteers, musicians, special guests and nonprofits; staffing the market information tent, processing SNAP and credit/debit cards, fundraising, cooking demonstrations, counting market shoppers, conducting vendor and customer surveys, and other outreach projects. Some assistance with data entry, marketing research, social media, photography and special events.

A week as an intern June through August typically looks something like this…

  • Mondays ­ Farmers Market preparation and promotion
  • Tuesdays ­ Farmers Market (1:00 pm to 7:00 pm) ­ REQUIRED
  • Wednesdays ­ Post market admin / activities coordination for next market day

Preferred applicants will enjoy interacting with lots of people, working with children, have an interest in gardening and other outdoor chores, a tolerance for summer temperature extremes and the ability to lift 50 lbs. It will be considered a big PLUS if you have “handy” skills in carpentry, electrical or mechanical repairs, or a general tendency toward Do­It­Yourself­ism!

Must be able to work on market day, Tuesday, from 11 am to 7:30 pm, with availability on Mondays and Wednesday (or Thursday or Friday).

A car is not necessary to the work itself, but can be very helpful. Reliable transportation to and from the job is necessary.

The Market Assistant reports to the Market Manager.

Call for submissions: VA Engage Journal (due 6/1)

VA Engage Journal Call for Papers, Volume 5: 

Special Section: Civic Action and Civic Health in the Commonwealth 

“Our nation finds itself in a befuddling juxtaposition of realities. We have the highest access to voting rights in our history, yet we struggle to muster half of eligible voters to exercise their rights. Despite a public that remains largely disengaged with electoral politics, Gallup’s poll on civic health reveals that Americans contribute more time and money to those in need than citizens of any other nation.”

 (A Crucible Moment, 2012, 7-8)

What makes a community civically healthy? What inspires or hinders a community’s civic action?

By many conventional measures, we find ourselves undergoing what the authors of A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy’s Future call a “civic erosion” (6). At the same time, new conditions for mobilizing knowledge are fostering new forms of civic action and activism. For this special section of Volume 5 of the VA Engage Journal, we invite contributions that deepen our collective understanding of public participation across the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or provoke new thinking about the meaning and manifestation of civic health in our communities.

Submissions may respond to the dilemmas evoked above, to the following questions, or to related topics:

  • How do the ways communities are developed (physical layout, access to resources, etc.) affect relationships, sense of community, identity, and the ways people participate in public life?
  • What does civic engagement look like in the Commonwealth today in different spaces and with distinct populations?
  • What role do the arts play in creating a sense of place or community for people?
  • How can scientific inquiry help our communities address complex problems and advance public deliberation and collective action?
  • How is activism being redefined on our campuses and in our communities?

Submissions for this special section should fit in one of the Journal’s regular categories for submission: critical reflection, review of literature or practice, or research study, Editors encourage submissions that explore this theme via multi-media and artistic products; this might include photos, video, digital stories, etc.

In addition to submissions for this special section, editors welcome submissions for Volume 5 that meet the criteria for the Journal and fit in an existing submission category, on any relevant theme.

Submission deadline for Volume 5: June 1, 2016.

The VA Engage Journal promotes engaged scholarship by undergraduate, professional, and graduate students. The mission of the VA Engage Journal is to build our collective practical and intellectual capacities for meaningful community engagement by providing a forum in which students enrolled in colleges and universities across Virginia can share and reflect critically on their own community-engaged experiences, and can disseminate knowledge emerging from their engaged practice and research. The journal provides a forum for students to publish research studies (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods), reflection essays, and reviews of current literature and engagement practice, all with guidance and mentorship from engaged faculty and staff. Any undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full- or part-time at a two- or four-year college or university in Virginia is eligible to submit an article. Submissions with multiple authors are welcome. The VA Engage Journal is published once annually.

$2000 summer living scholarships available from HI USA

HI Richmond is helping HI USA give out $2000 travel scholarships in the Richmond area. We’re looking for 18-30 year olds interested in traveling abroad but who lack the financial means. Need not be students, but the trip must include an educational or volunteering component. Four scholarships are available in the Richmond area, and the application process is relatively easy. Deadlines May 15.

local synapse meeting on 4/7 (non-CLA)

Join us for the second Hub 007 with Synapse.  The non-profit partner for this event is Art180.

Local entrepreneur and Spider alum, Keith Reynolds, and his business partner, Steven Lowrie, founded an organization called Synapse.  Synapse is a membership organization that blends the best practices of business networking organizations and civic organizations (like Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.) in an effort to create a collection of community minded people and professionals who want to build relationships and find success through service to each other and their community.  Groups of Synapse members are called Hubs, and each Hub is built around a Hub Leader (a business owner or professional who has a desire to support the mission of a local nonprofit while building a team of trusted professional resources) and a Nonprofit Partner Executive Director or senior staff member, who wants to better connect with the business community, while helping to raise awareness and develop resources for their organization.  Most Hub meetings are held at their nonprofit partner’s office/headquarters, and 90 minute meetings are organized for each Synapse Hub on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.  The Synapse concept creates an environment where business owners and sales professionals have regular opportunities to learn about the missions and meet the employees of many local nonprofit organizations while allowing them to also promote themselves, their businesses and their personal/professional interests, passions, skills and talents.  The meeting agenda is designed to provide each nonprofit partner time to share their mission, personal passion for the organization and upcoming events and/or needs.  After an additional few minutes of questions and answers, all participants in attendance have between 2.5 and 3 minutes to talk about themselves before using the final 15 to 20 minutes of each meeting to brainstorm openly, creating valuable connection opportunities.

Currently, Synapse has 25 Hubs that meet regularly around Richmond and 2 active Hubs in Charlottesville.  Membership is currently in excess of 230 and expected to exceed 250 by the end of February.

Hub 007 was always intended to be different from all other Hubs, and Synapse will be holding its 2nd Synapse Hub 007 meeting @ UR on Thursday, April 7 from 3-4:30p.m.  Keith Reynolds will be the Hub Leader, and Art180 will be the Nonprofit Partner.  Participants will include 8 to 10 Synapse member business owners who are, or will soon be, looking for interns or new employees, and 8 to 10 UR students who may be interested in entrepreneurship, civic engagement, volunteer opportunities or jobs/internships locally.
