Phoenix AmeriCorps Urban Fellows Program

The Phoenix AmeriCorps Fellows Program is a one-year tutoring program offered at each Phoenix school. Fellows are paired with students to provide 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 tutoring in Math, English Language Arts, and Biology for 68-minute sessions. Fellows also offer push-in support in classrooms, increase the schools’ operational capacity, and lead student activities and athletics.
We are seeking talented college graduates who are interested in making a difference in the lives of students who have previously struggled in school through daily tutoring. The right individual for this year of service will have a fierce commitment to confronting the educational inequality that exists in inner city education today. Because our students are often suffering from years of educational neglect or apathy, our staff must be driven with a sense of urgency and energy.

As a Fellow, this year will be an entry point into the urban education movement, but more importantly, it will provide an invaluable opportunity to transform scholars’ perceptions of the world, of themselves, and of their futures. After their year of service, Fellows report back saying they feel equipped to tackle their own career ambitions. Fellows have gone on to attend medical or law school, teach in “No Excuses” schools, enroll in graduate school programs, work at non-profit organizations, and enter the private sector. Over one third of alumni have continued to work at Phoenix in a variety of capacities, from teaching to Student Support to Development.
