This April marks the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda. Our new friend and colleague Sandra Joireman and I chatted the other day about ways for us to remember the genocide as a community and to think about ways of how we can use the occasion to think hard about the future of ethnic cleansing, given that it keeps happening around the globe, over and over again.
Sandra and I have been brainstorming the idea of a “Rwanda Week” here at UR, the week of March 24th in the Brown Alley Room on campus, in which we are considering the first night as a movie showing (perhaps the film Hotel Rwanda), the second night as a faculty panel on ethnic cleansing, and a third night for a student panel. This is still very much in the early stages of production, but we wanted to keep you in the loop. Any suggestions or thoughts you’d have would be stellar.
Please feel free to share this email with others.
In the meantime, we’ll keep you posted as things develop.
With all my best,
