The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities is happy to partner with the
National Women’s Law Center (http://www.nwlc.org) and one of our
participating middle schools on an upcoming webinar titled “SPOTLIGHT ON
BULLYING & HARASSMENT: THE LAW AND ONE SCHOOL’S RESPONSE.”
Please join us on THURSDAY, MARCH 22 at 3:30pm EST. The webinar is free,
but registration is required at http://bit.ly/zdkwyR
Aimed at school administrators, teachers, parents, and advocates, the
webinar will include important information on the following:
– Schools’ Title IX obligations to respond to bullying and harassment,
including cyberbullying, and emerging law on balancing students’ free speech
rights with those obligations. Devi Rao from the National Women’s Law Center
will discuss these and other commonly asked questions about the law and
bullying and harassment.
– Find out how Passage Middle School in Newport News, Virginia worked with
the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities to implement “One Book, One
School,” an intensive anti-bullying initiative. Janelle Spitz from Passage
Middle School (in Newport News) and Ali Thompson from the Virginia Center
for Inclusive Communities will discuss this effort and explain their
impressive results. From September 2010 to September 2011, the school
decreased discipline referrals by 74%!
